The Sno-Bees have officially converted from a 501(c)(7) social club to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization!
This achievement is the result of a dedicated, year-long effort by our club’s volunteers. In November 2024, the club approved a motion to pursue this conversion. A committee was quickly formed and worked tirelessly alongside our legal counsel to navigate the complex application process. Thanks to their hard work, the IRS officially approved our application, effective October 14, 2025.
While we are still the same club dedicated to safe and fun snowmobiling, this new status opens up incredible opportunities for us to improve our trails and support our community. Here is what this change means for you and the Sno-Bees:
- Tax-Deductible Donations: For the first time, any donations you or local businesses make to the Sno-Bees are tax-deductible. This makes it much easier for us to raise funds for critical needs like new grooming equipment.
- Deductions for Volunteer Expenses: While IRS rules do not allow you to deduct the value of your time, you can now deduct out-of-pocket expenses incurred while performing trail maintenance or construction for the club. This includes fuel/oil for your equipment used on trails, materials you purchase and donate, and even mileage driven for club business. Note: Please keep your receipts and consult your tax professional for details.
- Vermont Sales Tax Exemption: As a 501(c)(3), the club is now generally exempt from Vermont Sales Tax on purchases. Every dollar we spend on trail tools, signs, and grooming supplies now goes further.
- Access to New Grants: Many private foundations and government programs prioritize or exclusively fund 501(c)(3) organizations. This gives us a seat at the table for significant new funding.
- Lower Operating Costs: We are already working to move our digital services—like website hosting, email, and newsletters—to nonprofit programs to save on overhead.
- Vermont Charitable Contribution Tax Credit: Vermont taxpayers who donate to us may be eligible for a 5% state tax credit on their contributions, providing an extra incentive to support our mission.
Thank you to the committee members who saw this vision through, and thank you to all our members for your continued support as we start this exciting new chapter.
